Flock Information

August 1, 2006

Currently we run the largest flock of Charollais sheep in the UK numbering some 500 ewes. Running this number of sheep allows us to be fairly ruthless with our selection procedures in order to maintain the quality of our stock for sale. It is our flock policy to lamb about 80 ewe lambs each year both as a means of trialling new potential stock sires and maintaining momentum of genetic progress.

We are particularly pleased with our purchases of 2005 and now have a formidable team of stock rams as follows:

Urlay Nook Endeavour, a Carnhill Cavalier son, whose dam was a contemporary of Jubilee’s mother. Purchased privately as a lamb from Bill and Judy Wilkinson, he has not only been successful in the show ring but his progeny are impressing us too with their conformation and good fleshing.

Urlay Nook Endeavour, XP4034 Male Champion of Champions 2005

Cwm Dunrig Edward YRY 4049, purchased at Builth Wells II Sale 2005 for 1850gns, shared with Clive and Robert Hopper. An extremely long good boned masculine ram with full loin and excellent gigot, his March born progeny are very impressive. With three years breeding now in the flock he is proving himself as a ram breeder whose progeny have excellent conformation and gigots. He is also producing good strong females including some with show potential. One of his daughters being first prize ewe lamb at the Great Yorkshire Show 2007.

Ash Charollais Filibuster YFD 5002, purchased for 2100gns at Worcester Premier Sale 2005, again a full fleshed ram whose December born progeny have excited much interest year on year. Though slightly lighter in the bone than Edward he has knitted very well with both Cougar and Jubilee daughters and ewes across the flock. Shearling rams and ram lambs by Filibuster have already topped the trade at Worcester and Chelford 2008 commercial sales. Our star ram lamb in 2008 is Foulrice Indiana DG 8077 who won ram lamb class at the Great Yorkshire show 2008 and was Reserve Male Champion. He is a lamb with tremendous length, width and growth rate.

Ash Charollais Filibuster, YFD 5002 Gold Award Ram

Foulrice Eboracum DG 4643, a Class I genotype of Riverdale Delta Force, a high indexed, good bodied sheep with gigots to match, now used extensively in the flock with high indexed offspring and shape to match. Our top price commercial shearling at our 2007 home sale at 600 gns was one of his sons.

Penrhos Flash Harry, YLK 5009, purchased at Lanark 2005 from Brian Evans for 3100gns

Foulrice Gallant DG 6752, Our best high indexed son of Flash Harry is producing excellent skinned hardy type ram lambs and ewe lambs.

Foulrice Grenadier DG 6311, very high indexed (393) son of Filibuster with the highest gigot shape score of any Charollais to date. A Grenadier son sold at Worcester Premier in 2008 to John Osborne for 2100 gns. Grenadier's progeny are very tight coated.

Edstaston Headmaster TG 7014, used sparingly in 2007 has run with a large number of ewes in 2008.

Backstone Hagar YHT 7002, used sparingly in 2007 has run with 70 shearling ewes in 2008.
